I think that @Lovecraft0110 is the most likely of us to have tried their acrylics properly, but he's also done his best to swear off acrylics forever! 
If it's a general starter set you're in need of then I would suggest the Vallejo set mentioned here. After that there's various "must-have" paints that people will recommend, but they vary from person to person. My advice here would be to start a topic in General Hobbying and see what people think.
