Just a quick post to start things off!

Undercoated tonight were 2 Intercessors and 2 Hellblasters, who will be the first models in the Heralds of Retribution 3rd Company.

Hopefully I'll be able to find time tomorrow night to start putting some colours down. The aim is for the end result to be something like this:

So after picking up a brush for the first time in maybe five or six years, three layers of purple, a poor attempt at blacklining and some neatening up later and we get to here!

Lessons (re)learned;
- painting at night is diffucult, even with a spotlight
- patience really is key
- yellow is a pain
- bending over for three hours hurts!

I've managed to find some Phoenician Purple online, delivery in a couple of days. Going to finish up these two in the colours I'm using, and then try at least one using the PP base. If it looks better (or even the same) then using a Citadel Base colour will save me a load of time.
Annoyingly the black ink I have doesn't seem to have particularly strong pigment, and I can't get hold of any Nuln Oil, which everyone raves about. Also can't find any Druchii Violet, just to see how it looks as a shade.

edit;
Loads more searching and I've managed to get hold of some Nuln Oil and Druchii Violet, plus some Rhinox Hide 👌 No Averland Sunset, but I can make do without that for now.

Phoenician Purple turned up today, and unfortunately it's not a shade I'll be using. Definitely sticking with the P3 Beaten - seeing it with fresh eyes tonight has helped, I think.

So! Tried a little highlighting. Turns out I'm really not very good! 😂 still, a bit of practice and I might get there. Also working on the rest of the first test marine and its slowly coming together I think. Might even be able to call it finished tomorrow, if I can get the helmet (specifically the lenses, which I'm really struggling with) right, and finish making both the plasma and the aquila not look awful.

For the second test I want to try out Druchii Violet for shading, assuming it's dark enough, but that won't arrive for a day or two.

Apologies in advance for photo quality - ambient lighting where I paint isn't the best, especially at night, so having to use lamplight for these!

Haven't managed to sit down again until tonight, but I'm a little closer to a finished test model.

Backpack in particular is still rough, and I'm not yet sure how to try the Aquila next, but I'm liking it.

Also had a first-ever attempt at battle damage on another model, but I'm not sure how much I like it. Might just be because my line work isn't anywhere near as smooth as I'd like.

Finished!
Don't know if I should go back and add battle damage though?

Either way as a colour test I'm happy enough with it.
Gave up on the helmet lenses and Aquila though, didn't want to end up with that much paint it obscured the details.

Starting to get the others blocked in. The quality is a little inconsistent, but that's mostly because I've used these to try things out. They'll do though - in the long run only I'll ever notice!

Next time I sit down will be blacklining and deciding on the battle damage!

Cheers @JamesH!

Not much in the way of progress lately - I can only paint in the evenings and real life keeps getting in the way. I have however managed to find a supplier of Vallejo Black Lava (cheaper than Wayland, too!), so I have some on the way to play with.
Next thing to find is cork, plasticard and plastic rod/tubing. Possibly brass tubing to replace flying stands too, not sure yet.

What's the plan with the bases?
